Beware of rogue domain registration companies

I regularly hear from customers that they have been called by a domain registration company that gives them a 'urgently' offers to 'still soon' to register domain names that are very similar to their own domain name. Or the same domain name, but with a different extension (for example .org or .info).

This domain registration company then tells the customer to respond quickly, or someone else could misuse it. They even say that a 'other party' has already shown interest in registering that domain name. They will then call you with the 'very helpful thought' that they want to give you as name holder priority on this domain name to prevent misuse of your company name.
They charge an absurdly high amount for this. And that while that 'other party' in 99,9% of cases does not even exist!

The bottom line is that they would like to sell you a very expensive, and useless, extension for a lot of money. And they hope you fall for it.

In many cases it is not even necessary to register a domain name with the extension offered (eg .info or .org). These extensions are not that interesting. If your name is Googled in the Netherlands, your .nl domain name always comes up first.

  • Are you active in the Netherlands? Then you have the extension .nl
  • Are you active in Europe? Then you have the extension .eu
  • Are you active internationally? Then you have the extension .com

So I would like to give you the tip to go here absolutely not to enter!
And if in doubt, call me first. Then we'll figure it out together.

This way you can avoid being misled and getting high bills.
